Enhancing raised bog habitat for endangered breeding Curlew on Lodge Bog: National Biodiversity Week
May 17, 2017 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
FreeThe day will start at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre with a talk about the IPCC’s nature reserve – Lodge Bog. The talk will include the ecology and biodiversity of Lodge Bog and will focus of the threatened Curlew and Large Heath butterfly both breeding on the bog. It will also describe restoration techniques for raised bogs.
The talk will be followed by a walk to the bog where the participants will learn how to block drains to restore high water levels in the bog. They will get first hand experience of biased bog management as they help IPCC staff install dams on Lodge Bog. This activity will include walking across difficult boggy terrain and some physical labour.
For those who do not wish to participate in the drain blocking activity, there will be an opportunity to learn about the bog biodiversity at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre. Activities will include pond dipping to explore the biodiversity in bog pools and searching for frogs, newts and creepy crawlies in the wildlife gardens.
This event will bleed by Katie Geraghty, Conservation and Campaign Officer with the IPCC.
