The area of the fen is 220 hectares, and a significant percent is state owned. Pollardstown Fen is the largest remaining calcareous (alkaline and calcium containing) spring fed fen in Ireland, and hosts a number of rare vegetation types and invertebrates, all which are food sources for a large and varied population of birds.
Free parking is available as well as a boardwalk which allows easy access to the fen.
Location: Pollardstown Fen (3km from Newbridge).
Admission: Free event – No booking required.
The theme for Biodiversity Week 2019 is ‘Our Biodiversity, Our Food, Our Health’.
Kildare Biodiversity Week has been organised to develop awareness of the importance of biodiversity and to better understand its value to the local, national and international communities.
The people of Kildare are invited to get out into Kildare’s Biodiversity, to visit Kildare wild spots, lakes, rivers, bogs, woodlands or to simply enjoy the biodiversity of their back garden.
